Enjoy earning free Starwood Preferred Guest points for riding in Uber? Starting on February 1, 2017 those earnings will drop by as much as half, depending on when you ride and your status in the SPG program. Per an announcement from the company this morning the new earning rates are:
- While staying at a SPG Hotel: Members will earn two Starpoints per US$1 spent with Uber (versus two, three or four Starpoints per US$1, depending on member tier).
- When not in-stay, members will earn one Starpoint per US$2 spent with Uber (versus one Starpoint per US$1).
The cut in earning is partially offset by a bonus promo for the month of February that will offer five points per dollar for rides while staying at a SPG property. No additional registration is required for this benefit if accounts are already linked.
Also, given the impending alignment of benefits with Marriott as the merger progresses perhaps the real good news is that the relationship will remain a little longer overall.
Also, when choosing whether to sign up or not for the linked accounts remember that it means SPG gets all sorts of data about you from Uber:
SPG-Uber Benefits Program Participant Data: Starwood will receive certain Participant personal information from Uber as agreed to by the Participant when registering for the SPG-Uber Benefits Program, which may be used by Starwood in connection with the SPG-Uber Benefits Program, including, without limitation, to verify account information and award Starpoints, and for Starwood’s own business purposes, which will be disclosed to the Participant at the time Participant registers for the SPG-Uber Benefits Program. The Participant personal information provided to Starwood from Uber will be identified by Starwood and Uber at the time of registration and may include a Participant’s name, address, email address, picture, and Uber Usage data (including, without limitation, member number, product, fares, length of ride, date, pick-up cities and times), and other account information regarding Participant’s use of Uber’s services. Solely with a Participant’s express consent, such personal information may be used by Starwood for marketing purposes (e-statements, promotional offers or events).
